How do I create a Virtual Machine using Hyper-V?

The following article explains how to create a Virtual Machine using Hyper-V. Each virtual environment you wish to create is created as a virtual machine. This is done through the Hyper-V manager located on the hardware node (the dedicated server).

If you wish to use one of our supported operating systems, you will need to create a virtual hard disk (VHD) that will be used during the creation process.

To create a virtual hard disk (VHD), please follow these steps:

  1. Log into your server using Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. Open a browser window and go to http://vmbuilder.safesecureweb.com/
  3. Enter the requested information about the new VM:
    • Operating System: select the operating system for the virtual machine
    • Machine Name: enter a unique name for the VM
    • Username: enter a unique username for the VM
    • Passowrd: enter a password
    • Confirm Password: enter the password again
    • Email Address: enter an email address that will receive any necessary software information for the VM
  4. Enter the requested IP information about the new VM (Optional):
    • IP Address: enter the IP address for the VM, you may need to contact your sales representative to purchase an additional IP address/li>
    • Subnet Mask: enter the subnet mask provided to you when you received the IP address
    • Default Gateway: enter the default gateway provided to you when you received the IP address
  5. Choose the software packages you would like installed on the VM.
  6. Enter the requested information about your Hyper-V server (not the new VM):
    • Username: enter the administrative password for the Hyper-V server
    • Password: enter the password
    • Server IP Address: enter the primary IP address of the Hyper-V server
  7. Click Submit Config.

The browser will take approximately 30 seconds to complete the process. Do not close the browser until you receive a confirmation. Once you receive the confirmation, the virtual hard disk will be created. This process may take up to 20 minutes depending on the operating system and software packages selected.

To create a virtual machine, please follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to c:\vmdownload\ and confirm the virtual hard disk (VHD) is complete, machinename.vhd. If you see a file called copyinprogress.vhd, you will need to allow more time for the VHD to complete before you can create the virtual machine.
  2. Open the Hyper-V Manager, typically located in Administrative Tools.
  3. From the Action menu, expand New and click Virtual Machine.
  4. Enter a name for the virtual machine and click Next.
  5. Set the memory allocation for the virtual machine and click Next.
  6. Select EXTVIRT and click Next.
  7. Select Use an existing virtual hard disk and browse to the vhd file.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Check Start the virtual machine after it is created and click Finished.

The operating system will now be installed automatically on the virtual machine. This process may take up to 20 minutes depending on the operating system and software packages selected.
